Addiction Treatment & Behavioral Health Services
Medication can play an important and meaningful role in a patient’s addiction recovery. When recovering from an addiction to substances like opioids or alcohol, stopping “cold turkey” can be dangerous. Withdrawal symptoms can be extremely painful, and even life-threatening in some cases. Even in the milder cases, the cravings caused by withdrawal make it difficult to maintain sobriety. Thankfully, there is a solution to this problem.
Medication management is a program designed to help patients who are recovering from addictions that cause dangerous withdrawal symptoms. There are several non-addictive medications that can curb the cravings and manage symptoms. At October Road, medication management is facilitated by a nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, or psychiatrist. We also provide individual therapy and a life-skills group from a master-level therapist.
Medication management may be recommended for patients who:
- Developed an alcohol or opioid dependence
- Have severe cravings and/or withdrawal symptoms
- Have a co-occurring medical or mental health disorder
- Were abusing multiple drugs at once (poly-substance abuse)
How Medication Management Can Help
The goal of medication management is to improve the patient’s quality of life so that they can have a stronger foundation for recovery and long-term sobriety. At October Road, we used evidence-based practices that have been proven to assist with recovery and wellness. Medication Management is offered at both our Asheville and Charlotte locations.
The specifics of a medication management program will vary depending on the patient’s condition, the substance they were addicted to, and how long they were abusing the substance. In many cases, medication management is used to slowly wean the patient off medication entirely. Dosages are carefully monitored and reduced over time as the patient physically recovers and makes progress in their treatment.
